Abelardo Rodrigues Museum |
Through the countless trips and strange situations, the lawyer Abelardo Costa
Rodrigues began a collection of objects that could express faith and religiousness obtained in various points of Brazil. The Collection consists
of Brazilian pieces and others that came from the orient, and Europe like sculptures, crucifixes and even documents that were guarded before in
other churches.
The museum was opened after the death of the lawyer in 1971 and was managed by his
family until 1973, when the governor of Bahia Antonio Carlos Magalhães bought the place facing a legal fight due to the immediate expropriation
of the government of Pernambuco who until then, had shown no interest in the art collection. The process that lasted three years was called "Holy
War" with Bahia ending up as the great winner.
The pieces of art where stored in the Museu de Arte Sacra of the Federal University
of Bahia from 1975 to 1981, and only then were sent to their actual place.
