São Francisco Church |
Founded at Bahia in 1587, the original convent ended up destroyed after the Dutch
invasion. The building was reconstructed in 1686 under administration of the São Francisco Third Order. The church’s structure, which has three
naves, differs from the usually one found in the Northeast region. The church also has a chorus and its style has influence of the Jesuit
churches.
Located in the historical center of Salvador, São Francisco’s Church and Convent
fascinate not only by being one of the most beautiful churches in Salvador, but also by having the internal part covered with gold. The baroque
façade and all of its typical elements, like mermaids, angels and flowers are part of scenery, also composed by stars and geometrical drawings
that exalt Nossa Senhora.
One of the church’s architecture notabilities is the facade, which illustrates the
resignation of São Francisco to the material goods, beside the Portuguese glazed tile panels. There are reports that, formerly, richer devotees
helped the church’s construction funding in exchange of a tomb next to the altar.
São Francisco’s Church and Convent still have 18 oil painted panels that pictures
the life of São Francisco and great sculptures of Manuel Inácio da Costa, born in Bahia. National Historic Patrimony Institute registered the
building in March 1938.
