| Salvador - Churches - Basílica Cathedral |
It’s the fourth and last remaining church of Colégio de Jesus’s architectonic body
of buildings. Built in the 18th century, the cathedral shows the emblem of the Companhia de Jesus in the ceiling. It has two towers and historic
images of São Francisco Xavier, São Francisco de Borja and Santo Inácio Loyola.
The Basilica Cathedral also carries traces of the portuguese architecture in
baroque style and is covered with lioz stones, farther showing internal details made of gold, as well as São Francisco’s Church. The gold in the
churches means that all wealth is still nothing in front of the gates of heaven and reinforces the idea that the portuguese church had to be a
"Golden Church".
In this church, the third general governor of Brazil, Mem de Sá, was buried and
Priest Antônio Vieira, famous for his energetic sermons, spent the last moments of his life. To record those stories, the cathedral has a sacred
arts museum. Among the heritage, there’s a statue of São Francisco Xavier, patron saint of Salvador, dated of 1986 and a presepio located in the
basement.
