| Salvador - Churches - Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Praia Church |
The devotion to Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Praia is so old that it ends up
mixing to the very story of Salvador’s foundation. When the first general-governor, Tomé de Souza, founded the city, he ordered the construction
of a small chapel in the saint’s honor, still in 1549.
The actual church is the third version of the temple constructed always in the same
place, since, after the first chapel, another sanctuary was built in 1623. The new project was elaborated and sent to Portugal in 1736, to be
built in lioz stone. Afterwards, the church’s pieces were sent, little by little, to Brazil and assembled like a giant puzzle. The works lasted
from 1765 until 1849.
In the courtyard, there’s a fountain where the marble stairway to the fraternity
room begins. The facade has neoclassic characteristics, enhanced by towers built in diagonal. The interior is decorated in baroque style. José
Joaquim da Rocha made the ceiling painting in illusionist style, in 1772.
Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Praia Church and all its heritages are registered by
National Artistic and Historic Patrimony Institute. In this church we can find Irmã Dulce’s burial monument.
