| Salvador - Churches - Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos Church |
The construction of Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos church began right in the
first months of 1704, but took almost a hundred years to be concluded. The sanctuary was built by freed africans and slaves, who worked on their
spare time, especially at night. The chosen place to the construction was a terrain located right in front of Pelourinho.
The interior of Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos Church has glazed tile panels
with sacred motives and statues of saints that are real relics, dated from the 18th century. Among them there are images of São Benedito, Nossa
Senhora do Rosário and Santo Antonio de Cartegerona. The ceiling panel dates from the same epoch.
The facade follows the model found in most of the churches of Bahia and blends the
baroque and rococo styles. The towers were built in indian pattern. The courtyard, located in the back of the temple served as slave’s graveyard.
Up to now, afro-brazilian priests uses to be ordained there.
