Salvador - Beaches - Porto da Barra Beach

The legend says that the city of Salvador began in the Barra, because it was exactly on the beach of Porto da Barra that Tomé de Souza landed in 1549 to found the city.

Since the middle of the middle of the 17th century, it has two fortresses. The Forte de Santa Maria and the Forte de São Diogo, that protect its calm and deep water. There are hardly no waves therefore it is indicated for bathing and for those who like to practice water sports like fishing, diving and swimming.

Recently the beach got a special illumination which now permits swimmer even during the night. There are no stands on the sand, only kiosks on the sidewalk of the beach, around centenary trees.
