With around 500 hectares of totally preserved Mata Atlântica, Pituaçu’s
Metropolitan Park is one of Salvador’s marks. By being built in urban area, it’s quite lively during weekends, with a public of about 5000
people.
One of the standings is the water mirror, surrounded by an 18 km long cycle way.
Inside the park there are around 205 different species of mammals, reptiles, birds, fish and amphibians. It’s a huge leisure area inside the
city, though making the park a scenario to musical events, like orchestra presentations, operas, music bands and percussionists. It houses an
open sky museum with 2000 sculptures, beside having kiosks, snack bars, sport courts, playground and bicycle and boat renting.
Besides the environmental protection granted by federal government, the Gambá
project developed a monitoring plan that aims the environmental education as a way of awareness to obtain better results in the preservation
area. Weekly, it is also organized recreation activities linked to environmental education opened to the community. Due to the project, it has
been constructed a kind of community laundry so that the water mirror could be preserved. Formerly, people used to do their laundry
there.
