SALVADOR

Religion

One of the reflexes of the mixture of indians, europeans and african cultures in Salvador is the strong religiousness of the people and the most impressing is the harmony in which the adepts of different beliefs live. The city has around 365 churches but a large part of the population are followers of the "candomblé" and "umbanda", religious brought to Brazil by the african slaves.

Some of the customs of these religions were incorporated as a habit by the "soteropolitanos", as the people who are born in Salvador are called. They wear white clothes on Fridays in honor of their God Oxalá in the Afro-Brazilian religious while it symbolizes Jesus Christ as well.

In times of war and religious conflicts, Salvador is a place of peace among the people that have different convictions is an example to be followed. In the city, the tourist can visit the catholic churches as well as the "umbanda" and "candomblé" centers with the assurance that they will be respected as people, before anything else.
