Solar do Unhão |
The Solar do Unhão is an old sugar cane Mill that today houses the Museu de Arte
Moderna da Bahia and a restaurant with a international quality cuisine where the most traditional dishes of the Baiana food is served. Open
daily, the Solar do Unhão has a different program for each day of the week with shows that captivate the tourists while they try the regional
delicacies. One of the most crowded days is Saturday when the predominating rhythm is jazz.
Even though it is located by the sea, the mill has the same details as the ones
located in the country, with the main house, the chapel, the slave’s quarters and a pillory. It belonged to Pedro de Unhão Castelo Branco, who
lived there in the middle of the 17th century. The high points of the mill are the panel of Portuguese tiles installed in the residence during
this period, besides the fountain and the beautiful chapel in honor of Nossa Senhora da Conceição.
On the death of the Portuguese owner, the Solar do Unhão was used to house a
factory of snuff and was used even as a warehouse for goods, before it was transformed into barracks for the marines during the 2nd world war.
After that, the old mill was purchased by the government of the state of Bahia and began to be used as headquarters of the Museu de Arte Moderna
da Bahia. Among the main paintings of the Museum are prices done by Candido Portinari, Di Cavalcante, Tarsila do Amaral and others.
There are various sculptures by world famous artists in the garden of the Solar o
Unhão. In short, the Solar do Unhão is a very visited place by tourists and by local residents exactly because it mixes culture and leisure. The
landscape of the old farm is marvelous and has transformed the Solar do Unhão into one of the postcards of Salvador.
