Salvador - Others - Barra Lighthouse

The Farol da Barra was built in 1536. It is located in the Santo Antônio da Barra Fort, the just fort of Brazil, in the Northern part of the Baia de Todos os Santos. The Fort was built to protect the coast from attacks by the enemies and pirates during the 16th and 17th centuries. During the first decades of its existence it was nothing more than just a mere trench and was only enlarged by the Portuguese when the colony was invaded by the French, already in the 17th century. Today the fortress has the shape of a star. Nowadays, the Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra houses the Museu Náutico. The collection has maps, equipment for navigation, scale models of the vessels and other objects found in ships that sent in the nearby coast. Objects used by modern navigators are also exhibited. Their is a coffee shop where the tourist can take advantage of a pause and enjoy the privileged view of the sea.

The beach of Farol da Barra has a relatively strong sea and is frequented mainly by surfers. Next to it is the Porto da Barra beach which has calm clear water. At night, there are various choices for entertainment for all ages between the Porto and the Farol da Barra, with bars, restaurants and stands that serve typical appetizers and other delicacies. The suggestion is to begin to enjoy the night watching the sun set first, that reflects a golden light on the sea and forms an image of unique beautify.
