| Salvador - Others - Modelo Market |
The Mercado Modelo of Salvador is the type of place where everything can be found.
There are almost 300 stands where the most different articles of the northeastern handicraft are exposed. It includes from lace towels, clay
dolls and ceramics, costume jewelry and even leather and cloth baldrics. There are restaurants and bars that have typical drinks and snacks. It
is also possible to watch the typical capoeira circles.
The first Mercado Modelo was built in 1861 as the third custom house of the city.
However, a five destroyed the market in 1971 and another building was raised in the same place. Another tragedy occurred in 1984, when the
building had to be completely reformed because of a new fire. Even since, it has maintained the same form, with almost 300 stands spread over
the place.
The presence of the typically dresses Baiana women with various trinkets and
delicacies to sell is guaranteed, including some who sell only the traditional ribbons of Nosso Senhor do Bomfim. The Mercado Modelo is next to
the Elevador Lacerda.
