Festa
de Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Praia (Our Lady of Conceição of Beach
Party)
A catholic manifestation carried
out since 1549, when Brazil’s first general governor, Tomé de Souza, began
his devotion at Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Praia, whose stone
frontispiece came from Portugal. Festivities start in the end of November,
with a daily novena in the evenings at the main church, in Cidade Baixa.
They also involve an outdoor mass and a procession, and parallel to that,
the outdoor party around Mercado Modelo, with typical food and drinks,
uniting Bahia’s profane happiness and its sacred devotion to mysticism.
