 Tiradentes - Train Ride

Train Ride

Train Ride

In Tiradentes, one of the most picturesque tours is to take the train to São João del Rei. The 12km long course is done on about 30 minutes. The railroad goes through Serra de São José, bordering Rio das Mortes. It was inaugurated in 1881 by Emperor Dom Pedro II.

The locomotive which takes the tourists to São João del Rei is a “Maria Fumaça”, similar to those used in the 19th century. At the station, there’s “Museu Ferroviário” (Railroad Museum), where are exposed mechanical parts and photos that tell the history of the trains implantation in the region.
