| Trancoso - Churches - Igreja São João Batista |
The Igreja São João Batista was built in 1583, by the Jesuit Priests that had
arrived a couple of years before and ended up staying in Trancoso. At that time,
this district of Porto Seguro was just an enormous village of the Tupinambás
Indians.
The characteristics of the
original construction are still preserved. There is no luxury in the
architecture of the church which has a lateral pulpit for holding masses besides
a mezzanine for the chair and a stair case that goes to the bell.
The garden of the church is very
interesting. There is a pepper tree in the garden which is a type of pungent
seasoning and has a fruit that is very similar to the mulberry. In the back of
the church, traces of an old indigenous cemetery can be found.
