Urubici |
The lands where Urubici is located today were inhabited since the beginning of the
19th century, when there were only bororó indians and landholders in the region. In tupi (brazilian indian language), Urubici means
smooth or bright bird.
In 1884, Urubici was formed by approximately 25 families that lived spread all over
the valley. Since 1901, there were already a brickworks and water mills. Until the decade of 1950 Urubici was a district of the neighbor city of
São Joaquim and became an independent city only in 1957.
In the beginning of the 20th century, european workers (portugueses,
italians and germans) covered the land searching for new work and settlement cores and Urubici was born from those expeditions. It was these men
that started the cultivation of agricultural goods in the fertile lands of the valley of “Canoas” and “Urubici” Rivers.
The annual average temperature is around 16ºC and, during winter, constant frosts
prejudiced agriculture and cattle breeding. However, by having an extreme fertile soil, the city is considered one of the biggest productors of
the State of Santa Catarina. Cattle Breeding are based in herds for meat production, but Urubici counts with great production of milk, honey and
eggs. The production is based in the work of families, usually numerous, today organized in associations and cooperatives.
Other kinds of industries based in Urubici are ones like “erva mate”, “fumo” and
wood, which also includes the production of furniture. Formerly, the city had an enormous quantity of forests on its territory, which started to
suffer with deforestation for furniture production as well as for opening space for plantations. Still, the city concentrates 70% of the area of
“Parque Nacional de São Joaquim”. |
