Snow at Morro da Igreja |
When people ask about the coldest place of Brazil, the answer is almost always
unanimous: São Joaquim. It really was, but since the decade of 1950, with its political emancipation, Urubici became the coldest city of Brazil.
Just to have an idea of the local climate, the annual average temperature is around 16ºC.
A forest of “araucária”, intermixed by waterfalls and small rivers, surrounds the
city, from where it’s possible to have a wonderful view of “Serras Catarinenses”. So, it’s not by chance that Urubici is more and more visited
by people interested in eco tourism and practitioners of adventure sports. There are more than 80 catalogued waterfalls, canyons and crystal
clear water rivers.
Among the main attractions are “Morro da Igreja”, the highest point of the entire
south region of Brazil (1827 meters high), besides “Morro da Igreja”. It’s in Urubici that about 70% of “Parque Nacional de São Joaquim” is
located. Also visit Avencal and “Rio do Bugre” waterfalls, 100 meters high and ideal for rappel. Trekking, off-road and mountain bike lovers
also find excellent route options.
There are few inns in the city and the best alternative is the farm hotels. For
those who want to camp there, despite the cold, they can stay at “Parque de Exposições Manoel Prá”. Even during summer is advisable to bring
coats and jackets, because the temperature always falls at night.
Urubici has innumerous events during the year, specially “Festa Nacional das
Hortaliças”, in March, and “Campeonato Nacional de Pesca de Truta em Rio”, in the middle of October, without mentioning the rodeos, cattle fairs
and thematic balls.
