Urubici - Park - São Joaquim National Park

São Joaquim National Park

São Joaquim National Park

Urubici houses 70% of the area of São Joaquim National Park, an environmental reserve with more than 49000 hectares, which also comports a research center. Created in 1961 to avoid that the trees, especially “araucárias”, were destroyed by the wood industry during the decades of 1950 and 1960.

The scene is very different from that found in other regions of the country. The region’s climate is temperate, rainy season between August and October and snow during winter, with temperatures bellow 0ºC. The annual average temperature varies between 14 and 12ºC. So, the vegetation is basically formed by cold resistant plants. Among the animals that can be seen there are “pacas”, “cachorros-do-mato” and “jaguatiricas”, besides the beautiful “gralha-azul”.

São Joaquim National Park is highly demanded by adventure sport lovers, since the place is full of rivers and waterfalls ideal for the practice of rappel and rafting. Those who practice cycling or trekking also don’t get disappointed.

Address: From Lages, go through BR-282 up to km146. After, go through SC-430 to Urubici, up to Morro da Igreja. Other option is to go through highways BR-340 and BR-438.
