Chapada dos Veadeiros - Excursion in the Park

The Parque Nacional da Chapada do Veadeiros covers an area of 60 thousand hectares of land in the interior of Goias. Only a small part is open to the public that is done in a very controlled manner. No one can enter the park without a guide for safety reasons as well as to avoid plundering the nature.

At present, two excursions are offered in the Park but the management is studying the possibility of opening up two new trails. The itineraries are among the most sought out by the tourists that visit the Chapada dos Veadeiros. In the entrance of the park, the tourists together with a guide attend an educational lecture with explanations about the place, the attractions and the importance of the preservation of the nature.

Saltos do Rio Preto

The excursion begins an approximately 12 km long trail that leads to two waterfalls. The first waterfall is one of the cards of the National Park and is 120 meters high. However, the tourists watch the waterfall from above, in a belvedere because the descent until the base has to be authorized by the Ibama because it is a breeding are for wild animals. Further on the trail is the second waterfall which is 80 meters high. The water which is rich in iron oxide gives a dark color to the river that after the fall forms an enormous natural pool where the tourist can swin at ease. It is best reserve a whole day for the excursion to the Saltos do Rio Preto.

Canions e Carioquinhas

A trail that is a little over 12 km goes to the canyons of Rio Preto, which are rock walls with marrow and sinuous passages cut by the river. The canyon I can only be visited during the dry period but the canyon II is open all year around and forms a natural pool where the tourists can bathe in transparent water and full of fish. A walk of around 30 minutes separates the canyons from the Cachoeira das Carioquinhas, a falls of 30 meters of dark water from the Rio Preto.
