Chapada dos Veadeiros - São Jorge - Presentation

For those who don’t make a point about luxury, staying in the Vila São Jorge is the best choice to get to know the Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros, in Goias. The entrance gate of the park in located in São Jorge, while the city of Alto Paraíso, which has a better infrastructure, is 37 km from the park and forces the tourist to go back and forth everyday.

Even though the accommodations in São Jorge are simple they are comfortable and, when all red with the dazzling natural landscape of the Park operate like a real invitation for meditation. The same as in Alto Paraiso, Vila de São Jorge is inhabited by hippies intellectuals and artists who like to keep in contact with the nature. With a population of only 500 people the “vila” had almost 3 thousand people during the peak of the inning, in the decade of the 50’S. One of the first points visited by the tourists when they arrive is exactly the Cachoeira da Rodoviária (Waterfalls of the Highway) which was called by this name because at the margin of these waterfalls there was a type of highway with several buses transporting miners.

According to the mystics, São Jorge is a powerful centers of energy of the planet due to the gigantic mine of quartz crystals in its subsoil. All of this crystal in the subsoil of São Jorge was discovered in 1912, but only called the attention of the fortune hunters 40 years later when the price of the market stimulated the courage of the miners.

From those period only same reminders remain, specially a clay house built in 1953 by one of the first miners of the region and that exists until today having gone through small reforms. At present the house was transformed into an inn. In São Jorge it is also possible to buy handicraft of the local artists besides the brute quartz of the miners that still service in the region. Even though it is just a small village, during the high season there is no lock of diversion.

Almost every night there is a party with forro and typical dances, besides the Festival de Cultura (Festival of Culture), where the local artists present themselves during a one week of a lot of joy.
